Yamaha PSS-7

A children’s keyboard released in September 1997, designed during my time at IDEO in collaboration with interaction designer Hector Moll Carrillo. We developed an intuitive interaction system that made its many built-in songs and sampled sounds as easy to access and enjoy as possible, integrating the interface seamlessly into the three-dimensional form of the product. We were also asked to propose the musical selections. Working together, we chose songs that would appeal not only to children—the product’s primary audience—but also to adults. Our aim was to create a keyboard that could be enjoyed by users of all ages.

Nearly 30 years after its release—and long after production and sales ended—the PSS-7 continues to be loved by people around the world. Some create remarkable performances with this tiny keyboard, while others modify it to produce entirely new and unexpected sounds. It continues to be enjoyed and explored in many different ways. There is something about the PSS-7 that makes people curious and want to keep it close. Perhaps because it inspires this kind of affection, it has continued to evolve together with its users, even after leaving the hands of its designers. The PSS-7 was a wonderful project that showed me how a product can take on a life of its own.
